Have you ever heard parents say, “I just want my child to be happy?” L. Gregory Jones, dean of Duke University Divinity School, asks, “What if we expected parents to say, ‘I just want my child to be faithful’?”
The question gets to the heart of Christian education at FUMCOG. It’s not about keeping children happy; it’s about encountering something greater than ourselves. It’s about God’s incredible commitment to us, and the commitment to God that gives our life meaning. It’s about the hunger we all share for something worth living and dying for.
On the surface you might see young children engaged with glitter and glue, or friends gathered around a table sharing concerns about high school or parenting. You might see a teacher cradling a baby, or a hapless associate pastor struggling to remember the guitar chords to a song about Moses. But underneath it all is that passion, that hunger, to follow Jesus into lives shaped by a vision for justice and love.

In Confirmation Class, young people are invited to explore a deeper commitment to the church through a focused, two-year program including classes, trips, retreats, community service, and worship. Eighth graders and older students who choose to reaffirm their baptism through confirmation or to be baptized will have this opportunity each year. The class meets Sunday mornings at 9:45 a. m. and from time to time for special trips and activities.
