Bundle of Sticks

The bundle of sticks signifies strength. One stick can be broken but many sticks bound together cannot be broken. This bundle of sticks was first placed on our altar when we were working together in support of a family from Central American in danger of physical harm from their government.

After School Program - 10th Year
Germantown High School students receive tutoring in major subjects, and participate in field trips, hands-on cultural experience and summer work experiences in a variety of careers. Program continues to employ a qualified staff and relies heavily on the commitment of volunteers from the congregation. Contact Gloria Akers.

Africa Interest Group
A new group is forming of people who are interested in Africa and/or have lived in or visited the continent. Contact John Riggan.

FUMCOG Against the Death Penalty
The FUMCOG Against the Death Penalty Group advocates for the abolition of the death penalty and educates the congregation on re-lated issues. The committee sponsors the “For Whom the Bells Toll” project, ringing a bell of our carillon in opposition to state-sponsored execution. Contact Karen Clark or Eileen Gilkenson.

The FUMCOG Fair Trade Bazaar
The Fair Trade Bazaar is a witness in the church to justice through fair trade. The Bazaar provides a market of goods created by arti-sans fairly compensated for their labor, educates shoppers about fair and exploitive labor practices and supports the FUMCOG mission through contributions of profits to the church. For more information, contact Julie Cox.

The Haiti Committee
The Haiti Committee partners with Haitian neighbors here in Philadelphia to work for justice in Haiti, and plans trips for FUMCOGers to visit Haiti and learn about issues of justice there. We also raise money to support the work of a parish with which FUMCOG is twinned in Fondwa, Haiti. Contact Fred Clark or Ray Torres.

Northwest Interfaith Hospitality Network
As a hosting congregation of the Northwest Interfaith Hospitality Network, FUMCOG provides shelter and meals for temporarily homeless families, usually for three weeks in the spring and three weeks in the fall. The mission of the program is to empower homeless families that we call “guests” to become independent and to maintain that independence after leaving the Network. Volunteers are always needed during hosting times. Contact Nick Claxton or Carol Clyde.

Religion and Race
The Religion and Race committee keeps the issues of racial and social justice before the members of FUMCOG, educating the congregation and actively supporting the elimination of racism and white privilege. We also celebrate FUMCOG members’ actions in pursuit of these goals. Contact Barbara Mitchell or Willie Little.

Reconciling United Methodists
This group seeks new ways to make sure GLBT people feel invited and welcomed at FUMCOG, educates and updates the congregation on GLBT issues in the larger Church and World, and works with other groups outside FUMCOG to find ways to make the UMC truly a church of Open Minds, Open Hearts, Open Doors. Contact Barb Revere or Anne Ewing.

Religion and Accessibility
The Religion and Accessibility Committee works to make worship and church activities welcoming and barrier-free for all. Projects have included the elevator, space in selected pews for wheelchairs, large print bulletins and a sound system assist. Contact Barbara Revere or Roberta Millard.
