SPECIAL APPEAL: FOR THE LOVE OF CHILDREN (FLOC), Central Methodist Mission, Johannesburg, South Africa
FUMCOG has a long association with this historic church and its mission which serves the inner city community of Johannesburg. For years the Julia Morgan Fund provided annual support for FLOC’s early childhood education programs, but in recent years moved on to other pressing needs. Three years or so ago, we became aware that the Church and Mission had courageously reached out to the growing numbers of refugee families fleeing oppression in Zimbabwe, offering refuge and emergency services. This support was widely criticized by the local residents who felt their own poor people needed and deserved any support available even though the Zimbabweans were in desperate shape. Starting in the fall of 2009, the Julia Morgan Fund is supported FLOC’s child care services to the children of these families. The Trustees have just approved the third of these grants.
Now we have learned that the program is under tremendous financial pressure in part due to the number of refugee families being supported. During a work visit to South Africa in November, I met with Ms. Sbongile Ncube, the Director of FLOC, who told me of the struggle to keep the doors open and that staff had not been paid for some months. We have sent the Julia Morgan Fund check which will provide much appreciated help, but I also wanted to make FUMCOG’ers aware of this pressing need for support from this old friend of our church which is fighting the good fight against some pretty tough odds.
Chair, Julia Morgan Fund
FUMCOG member Dr. Anna Mulliken established a special endowment in 1956 and named it the Julia Morgan Fund in honor of a Methodist medical missionary to China. Although she originally limited the fund to providing salary support for overseas missionaries, Dr. Mullikin later expanded the purpose and gave the Senior Pastor and Trustees the responsibility to decide the uses of the Fund’s income. Over the years the Fund has supported many organizations and causes in which FUMCOG has been involved. In 2006, Pastor Michele Bartlow and the Trustees awarded the following four grants totaling $14,000 on the recommendation of John Riggan, chair of the Fund.
